Search engine optimisation (SEO), or web site optimisation as it is also called, is the process of applying techniques to a website to increase traffic from search engines. Typically this means improving the ranking of a site within search results for a specific keyword, or set of keywords.

The techniques of SEO are not a well defined published standard that is agreed upon within the web development industry. In fact SEO is something of a black art as search engines do not publish the internal workings of their search algorithms. As a consequence the SEO industry has attracted dodgy operators who either promise beyond what is possible to deliver, or deliver short term results using techniques that are detrimental to your site over the long term.

This site attempts to be a starting point for those wanting to learn about SEO. Perhaps to undertake optimisation on their own site, or for someone who wants to engage a third party but needs to familiarise themselves with the concepts and ideas behind optimisation.
